The Ultimate ICE-Solution: ICE-TAGS & ICE-CAMS
It is a common misconception among most of us that our trips are well planned or organised. Some pack undies and some don’t, some check the weather and some couldn’t care less. Some just get on a bike and ride into the weekend or off to work almost foreseeing or hoping that we will not encounter any problems along the way. Then comes Murphy and changes everything that you weren’t prepared for – an accident!
Yeah we all hate that guy, but it is true that in most cases the unexpected happens, and no one is to blame. Or can this myth be shattered by the Ultimate ICE-Solution?
The guys at ICE-TAGS were kind enough to provide me with an ICE-CAMS unit. It took me less than 30-minutes to fit the complete unit, ready for the streets. Not that I’m out looking for an accident to happen of course, but to see how it can help save a life (the educational side), and in case of an accident/incident provide valuable evidence (the legal side) to the cause and bring the guilty party to justice. Even if had to be me; heaven forbid!
The little touchscreen unit offers a few cool options like Full-Screen Front Camera, Split-Screen both Cameras and Full-Screen Rear Camera. No matter how you fit the cameras, you have the option to rotate the lens to the correct recording or viewing angle. It’s even fitted with a nifty little flashlight in the back in case you don’t know how to operate your phone torch when you need to.
The video quality of 720 HD is perfect for its intended use, capturing video from both cameras in one video frame. I’m happy to see that it doesn’t record one single long video session, but gives you a series of 90-second consecutive sessions instead. This makes it easy for browsing through the footage and pulling only selected clips from the MicroSD card. Check out the sample clip on one of my test runs at the foot of this article.
Note: the 2-inch screen is not there for you to gawk at or fidget with while riding!
The touch screen unit offers 2-channel playback of recorded footage (audio & video), my suggestion is to always have both the cameras running, one covering your 6 and the other your heading. The screen unit can easily be clipped off from the bike mount, or simply remove the MicroSD card to copy the content to a computer for viewing. I preferred the latter but would remove the screen unit from the bike just in case Murphy is tempted to do it for me.
If you ride a motorcycle and planning a road trip, no matter the distance, then be sure not to leave home without the ICE-CAMS. Road accidents are as real as the rising sun every morning, and motorcyclists are at risk 24/7/365.
Armed with the ICE-CAMS, which is always on from the moment you open the throttle, you will have recorded visuals that cover the front and back of your motorcycle, offering you the assurance that your “ICE Brother” is watching.
Taking it one step further, and knowing that ICE-CAMS can’t talk for you when you are incapacitated, make sure that you also wear your ICE-TAGS Emergency Medical Alert Bracelet. The ICE-TAGS bracelet will assist first responders to decide on the best course of lifesaving treatment based on any allergies or medical conditions you may suffer from.
The ICE-TAGS bracelet displays information like Name and Surname, ICE-Contact, Allergies, Medical Aid, and other important information any EMS Paramedic will need to help you.
Hospitalisation is outrageously expensive, especially if you have no or a limited medical aid and insurance; but with an ICE-CAMS fitted to your motorcycle, you will be protected from having to carry these expenses alone, specifically in the event that you were not at fault in the accident.
Fitting ICE-CAMS will provide you with legal proof from the recordings of both the front and rear of the bike, ensuring that the guilty party is held accountable for any damage to yourself and to your motorcycle in any court of law.
The ICE-CAMS will in no way distract the rider, as it is not fitted on either the handlebar or display, but installed in a way that does not cause any danger or distraction while riding. It is also the first waterproof lens ‘dash-cam’ to be introduced to the South African market, developed and designed for a semi to a permanent installation on any type of motorcycle.
The DVR offers 720P HD quality dual imaging that starts recording within a few seconds of the boot-up cycle, without the need for any wiring into the Electrical Harness or ACC of the ignition. It is a simple and safe solution that takes no more than 30 minutes to install. The ICE-CAMS continues to record while you are riding or stationary idling, but as soon as your motorcycle is switched off and no vibration is detected, the unit disconnects with a 3-minute countdown process to a complete shutdown.
ICE-CAMS functions through the menu system include:
- Setting Video Resolution (1280 x 720 recommended)
- Set or Disable Time/Date Stamp
- Record Sound On/Off
- Video Playback
Before the next ride, contact Tami or Len at ICE-TAGS to get yourself covered with the ICE-CAMS and ICE-TAGS Medical Alert Bracelet. I for one, will not ride without my Ultimate ICE Solution anymore.
