FEATURING THE ROBUST RELIABILITY OF MESH 2.0
Sena is the leading Motorcycle Communication System in the world today. Their units are of the best quality with amazing sound. Sena recently launched the NEW Sena 50R and 50S. What makes this units so unique as there are so many different Motorcycle communication systems but SENA has intruduced their upgraded unit now with MESH2.0 intercom system.
During the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy Sena was one of the main sponsors to this event. So each of the 140 BMW Motorrad GS Trophy riders were supplied a SENA 50R unit as communication systems between marshal and riders aswell as riders to riders. This is the first BMW GS Trophy event where this communications systems has been used on such a large scale.
The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy is a event arranged by BMW every 2 years at a different location all around the world. Its like the world cup of BMW Motorcycle client riders riding 2500km over 8 days. How it works is that you fist have to qualify in your own country on a regional level. Then you compete on a national level and the top 3 riders with a local journalist gets to participate at this event. The GS Trophy idea started in South Africa as far back as 2004 with the original BMW Eco event and later changed to the BMW GS trophy event. In 2008 the first BMW International GS Trophy was held in Tunisia then 2010 in South Africa with the first South African team to participate. Then 2012 in South America, 2014 in Canada, 2016 in Thailand, 2018 in Mongolia and the last event February of 2020 in New Zealand. South Africa is the winners for the third consecutive time winning the event in 2016,2018 and 2020.This year 66 participants from across the globe, competing in 22 teams of three riders, and accompanied by a journalist representing their nations. Everyday consists of 2 -3 special stages and the BMW GS of choice this year was the BMW F 850 GS launched recently.

BMW Motorrad international GS Trophy in New Zealand 2020

BMW Motorrad
The new SENA 50R that was used at the BMW GS Trophy for me was the best system to date that I have used in motorcycle communication systems. As a Marshal you are followed by 8 other riders form 2 different counties or regions. One of your jobs is to get them from the start of the day to the end. In past trophy event the challenge was always to communicate to the participants in the case of danger or when to stop. Now with each participant fitted with the new SENA 50R this made the job easy. Each Marshal had his dedicated channel for the day example I was channel 8 or 10 depending on the day. So by the double click of the small black button on the top right side of the unit (under the 50R writing} you are in channel setting mode. Then participants would push the + button till channel 8 and then the big button in the middle to confirm. Now me and the rest of the group is on channel 8. To go to MESH mode you push the small black button once and there you go. All one big chat with each other. As New Zealand dirt roads are very different from anywhere else in the world with tight corners and narrow dirt roads this worked brilliantly. The tracks were between 250-400 km per day with +- 50% of that gravel. As the dirt roads are narrow it made right hand corners very tricky as you cannot see much and you have to keep way left to avoid head on traffic. That was still ok but the more tricky part is that the road cambers off to the side with some loose pebbles. So a bit to much throttle and the back would slip out. Where the SENA 50R unit worked in this case was that I as a Marshal would encounter head on traffic first. With MESH engaged I could speak to the other 8 participants and they would be alerted. Thus safe passing and all safe at the end of the day.

Now the New Sena 50R comes with a Sena 50 Utility Application!!!
Just as we all arrived back home from the BMW Motorrad International Trophy it was announced that the Sena 50 Utility App was launched and first things first I had to download it to my Iphone!!!
Now connectivity is even easier and switching between Mesh, Intercom, Music and even FM is now a tap on your screen.
It makes life so much easier and even more impressive I thought let me get my wife’s 5 year year old Sena SMH5 and pair it with my new 50R. No issues what so ever. No more pushing of buttons….. Just tap the screen on your phone.
Even more impressive is that we can share music or just with a tap she could listen to her own music. Both Sena systems could be controlled from my App.
Below is some snapshots from my Iphone…

At the time of this publication the Sena 50S and 50R is not as yet for sale in South Africa but promised to arrive soon.
